This story by Charles Dickens is a part of a larger story about the 1859 wreck of The Royal Charter, a steam powered clipper on its way from Australia to Liverpool, and carrying 370 passengers and a crew of 112. Many of the passengers were gold miners returning from the Australian Gold rush with their riches, and their was gold in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, a huge storm came up as the ship approached the coast of England, and the ship and all but 21 of its passengers were killed in the wreck. Charles Dickens, who then was an already famous writer in England, was on the scene soon after the wreck and interviewed the people involved in the wreck and rescue, and from this visit sprang two stories, one, a fictional account, featured here, and another, based on an interview with the local Reverend and witnesses, coming here next week. Also next week, our sister show 1001 Heroes will feature the story of The Royal Charter , the wreck and rescue attempts, and the treasure that is still being hunted today.
