In the story, Miskatonic's Dr. Dyer, a geologist, recounts the previously untold saga of what really happened to his expedition with hopes of preventing a second disaster before the University decides to embark in their footsteps. Chapter one sets up the original expedition with horrors to follow in the remaining 11 chapters.
