In Podcast Episode 115, “Never Settle for Less Than God’s Best,” Kim discusses the temptation we face to settle for less than God’s best. There may be many reasons we settle. In today’s story we see Samuel faced with one of those. What would have happened if he had attempted to settle for a king from David’s brothers? What has happened in your life when you settled for less than God’s best?

The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 16:8-13: with the key verses 10-11:

“In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” “Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.””

  • 12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. (Philippians 3:12-14)

“I ain't settling for just getting by

I've had enough so-so for the rest of my life

Tired of shooting too low, so raise the bar high

Just enough ain't enough this time

I ain't settling for anything less than everything, yeah.” (Chorus of “Settlin’” by Sugarland, Written by Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush, and Tim Owens).
