SHOW NOTES:
In Podcast Episode 137, “David’s Desperate Motley Crew,” Kim discusses the group of men who were drawn to David during his cave time. David was a man in a desperate situation and he drew a crowd of desperate men—“men who were in trouble or in debt or who were just discontented.” Under David’s leadership, the desperate of that day became defenders of the right.
The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 22:1-5 with focal verse 2:
1 So David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. Soon his brothers and all his other relatives joined him there. 2 Then others began coming—men who were in trouble or in debt or who were just discontented—until David was the captain of about 400 men.
3 Later David went to Mizpeh in Moab, where he asked the king, “Please allow my father and mother to live here with you until I know what God is going to do for me.” 4 So David’s parents stayed in Moab with the king during the entire time David was living in his stronghold.
5 One day the prophet Gad told David, “Leave the stronghold and return to the land of Judah.” So David went to the forest of Hereth.

26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. (1 Corinthians 1:26-28)
