Welcome back for a new season of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Leadership Log podcast

In the first episode of the season we have a discussion with Taylor Ruffin, from the AFLCMC Rapid Sustainment Office other wise known as the RSO, about the effort to bring augmented and virtual reality, or AR/VR, to the Air Force.

Taylor is the lead product manager for the AR/VR effort. Her team is working to reshape how the Air Force thinks about and approaches maintenance.

She explains that virtual reality is a computer-generated environment with the goal of being a fully immersive experience, while augmented reality is the ability to alter the view of the real world by employing virtual overlays, images and graphics.

VR will provide a rich training environment where maintainers will be able to practice high critical / low frequency tasks before going out to work on the actual piece of equipment.

AR will bring a bevy of tools to the maintainer such as digital tech orders and supplemental resource materials to draw from while performing maintenance in the field.

Ultimately the AR/VR effort will help to increase a maintainer's cognitive retention while decreasing maintenance downtime.
