After reaching across the Pacific Ocean for the seventh episode, we stay close to home for our eighth in a chat with UC Davis head women’s basketball coach Jennifer Gross. An outstanding guard and scholar-athlete who earned induction into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, Gross played professionally overseas, then briefly worked in sports marketing before returning to the sport as a coach. In 2004, she returned to her alma mater to serve as an assistant coach under Sandy Simpson, then took over the helm in the fall of 2011 after Simpson’s retirement.

Gross has since won four straight Big West Conference Coach of the Year awards and posted 173 total wins in her nine seasons as head coach. Adding in her time as an assistant for Simpson, she has helped the Aggies to 286 wins, four WNIT appearances, five Big West championships plus NCAA Tournament berths in 2011 and 2019. In today’s episode, Coach Gross shares her experiences of building a winning culture at UC Davis, being mentored by Jim Sochor, and literally having a family atmosphere on her staff.
