In leadership the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals or team is often considered relative and at times it’s challenging to pin down what really leadership is and the attributes a leader is expected to have.

In a conversation on the Practice of Leadership with Kings college Leadership students the former president of East Timor Jose Ramos Horta talked on how Leadership should be exercised through persuasion and humility and not coercion. President Jose Ramos Horta argued that as a leader one important quality you should have is that you care about people and issues, be compassionate and humble and use your position to try and effect change.

President Ramos-Horta who is today known for his work and promoting peace in conflict-on countries was a recipient of the Nobel Peace prize in 1996 for his work in achieving a just and peaceful solution to the East-Timor conflict. In his political role, he had brought about Timor’s independence from Indonesia and transitioned from UN stewardship towards a Democracy.

The conversation with the students was chaired by Professor 'Funmi Olonisakin, Vice-President & Vice-Principal (International) King College London.
