When Subramanian Raman (Sathiyan Gnanasekaran's coach) told him he would, in time, move up from his Table Tennis World ranking of 400 at the time, to break into the top 50, Sathiyan laughed! But sure enough in due time, Sathiyan made his coach's prophecy a reality by not just breaking into the top 50, but reaching up to a World ranking of 24 in 2019! Now he continues his pursuit of success in Table Tennis at the Tokyo Olympics.  

Catch our conversation with Sathiyan, as he dives into his story in the world of Table Tennis, that has taken him around the globe- he's played in leagues in Germany and Poland, and is now signed with the Okayama Rivets in the Japanese T-league, becoming the first Indian to do so. He delves into the variance in playing styles as well as tables and conditions across countries, and how he is preparing for the Tokyo Olympics. He shares his thoughts on the growth of table tennis in India, and how the private and public sectors can join hands in building a successful sports ecosystem in India to compete with the best in the world. He also goes into the changes he made in his mindset and mentality to implement a more aggressive playing style to take his game up a notch. 

His journey to Tokyo hasn't been easy, but with a combination of poise and the right mentality, Sathiyan is hoping to add Olympic success to his already medal-filled career including  ITFF Challenge wins in 2016 and 2017 in men's singles, to go along with 3 medals in his debut Commonwealth Games in 2018.
