Last week marked the start of the Lunar New Year. It’s the year of the tiger, a symbol of bravery and strength, something it feels like we all need right now to face an uncertain world. Due to easing restrictions in Australia, many were able to celebrate the Spring Festival with family again, but with international travel still difficult, some are spending yet another year a long way from home.

Hotpot by Yimin Qiang

Yimin has been separated from her family for 3 years, she finds herself longing for the food that reminds her of her life in China. When Yimin decides to make Hotpot for her Australian family, she finds a new way to connect to her home away from home.

Tin Valley by Mell Chun

Prompted by the rise in anti-Asian racism around the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, Mell set out to research the Chinese history of Tasmania and made some surprising discoveries. By telling the stories of Chinese-Tasmanian families, Mell hopes to discredit the myth upon which so much racism feeds, that Australia is, or ever was, White.
