Over four decades, Iran’s hardline regime has faced enormous challenges. The nation is struck by one of the world’s most severe outbreaks of COVID-19. Iranians are heaving under the weight of U.S. economic sanctions since the Trump Administration abandoned the U.S.-Iran nuclear deal. Earlier this year, a U.S. airstrike killed Iran’s influential military commander, Qasem Soleimaini. But Iran’s religious autocracy has proven remarkably durable, continuing to attack Western interests, pursue regional ambitions, and accelerate its nuclear program. Jarrett Blanc, senior fellow in Geoeconomics and Strategy at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, joins Altamar to explain Iran’s resilience. Blanc served as the State Department’s lead for Iran nuclear implementation under President Obama, including the landmark Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Blanc was also the Acting Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
