Monster Books: Episode 2 - YA Zombie Books - a podcast by Valeska Griffiths & Joe Lipsett

from 2020-11-18T05:05

:: ::

This week's episode is all about young adult zombie books!

Today we’re getting a little political with some genre mash-ups of the living dead: Out of Salem by Hal Schrieve and Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson. I talk about why horror, and zombie fiction in particular, is so relevant to political discussions and what these books have to say about modern life.

I also discuss body horror and the interesting ways that a zombie protagonist can give us insight into mortality and human nature. Then I delve into how friendships evolve and sometimes die and the interesting connections between zombies and witchcraft.

Highlights

  • 00:27 Zombie overview
  • 00:56 Politics in zombie fiction and kids’ literature
  • 01:56 Out of Salem review and discussion
  • 15:17 Undead Girl Gang review and discussion
