1 Kings 3:1-15 | Rev. Dr. R. Brandon Harris | Solomon oversaw the most peaceful and prosperous period in the history of ancient Israel. Wisely, he began his reign seeking the wisdom of the Lord and proceeded, empowered by that wisdom, to strengthen Israel as a nation. At its center Solomon constructed a grand temple, signifying the Lord's presence at the heart of king and country. However, as Solomon became a man of the world his focus shifted from the God who had brought shalom to Israel to the gods of his many wives. As a result, in Solomon's last days he witnessed the rebellion of his people, a sign of God's judgment for his unfaithfulness. At his death the great kingdom of Israel was at risk of collapse.
