Rev. Dr. R. Brandon Harris | The modern vision of love is primarily wrapped up in romantic notions of romance, sex, and feelings, leading many to think of love in flat, lifeless, and self-serving. These dynamics of love were definitely a part of the lives of first- century Christians, and there may have been some temptation to enact love in self-serving ways. But, Jesus challenged such a narrow vision and asked disciples to consider ways in which the deepest experiences of love were not just limited to easy feelings and experiences, but rather drew them into the deepest vulnerability.
