At least 27 people have drowned in the English Channel near Calais after their boat sank. The International Organization for Migration said it was the biggest single loss of life in the Channel since it began collecting data in 2014. Among them were five women and a child. Despite worsening weather, the crossings have continued this morning. Two boats have been brought to Dover carrying around 40 people.

Today’s Martha Kearney speaks to French MP Bruno Bonnell and UK Immigration Minister Kevin Foster about how the two countries will step up efforts to prevent crossings.
