It was two years ago on Sunday that a 50 year old woman and her 23 year old son were admitted to the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary with symptoms of Covid. Two years and 691,000 hospitalisations later, and sadly 156,000 deaths, there are 16,000 people currently being treated in hospital. A further 62,000 cases were recorded on Sunday. A lot has been learnt since the beginning of the pandemic about coronavirus, its treatment and the resilience or otherwise of our health services.

Today's Simon Jack speaks to Dame Jackie Daniel, Chief Executive of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust and also to Dr Ashley Price, Consultant in infectious diseases who treated the very first patients who were critically ill.
