After a difficult eighteen months for the NHS, hospitals throughout the UK have been bracing themselves for what could be the toughest winter in living memory.

Today's Martha Kearney visits The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne, where last Friday, doctors had to put elective surgery on pause. She speaks to staff and patients there about the pressure for beds.

Martha also speaks to Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive of NHS England in her first full length interview since her appointment in August.
