Western countries hope to confront Russian ambitions in Ukraine through sanctions rather than by force, but questions are being raised about their effectiveness. Targets so far have included Russian oligarchs, the banking system and aviation sector, with European airspace closed to Russian planes. In the UK the government has been accused of not going far enough, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer pointing to Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich, who has announced plans to sell the club. Mr Abramovich strongly denies doing anything to merit sanctions being imposed on him.

Today’s business presenter, Sean Farrington, spoke with Nigel Kushner, chief executive of law firm W Legal, who advises people and companies targeted by international sanctions. Today’s Simon Jack then spoke with Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal, about reliance on Russian energy. Also on the programme was Damian Hinds, Minister for Security and Borders.(Image Credit: Reuters)
