#010 Future Proof Your Career - Recognize, Own & Implement - a podcast by Ann Hiatt

I have been through several pivots and economic crises across my career working directly with major CEOs such as Jeff Bezos at Amazon immediately after the 2001 DotCom bust and Eric Schmidt at Google during the 2008 economic crisis. I also coached my global CEO consulting clients who are spread out over 4 continents during the 2020 pandemic.

This podcast episode walks you through how to future-proof your career! I present the best practices of employees and leaders who have not only survived but thrived during crises. We'll walk through examples and ways in which you can implement these, with replicable steps to help you plan and future-proof your career!

Future-proof isn't just STEM or anticipating how we will incorporate or compete with robots and AI. It also isn't about solely focusing on the highest paid jobs or highest growth industries because these might not equal happiness for you. I can tell you with assurity that there is no positive correlation between the highest paying jobs and happiness, and a lack of happiness is not future-proof! Being future-proof means consistently doing things you haven't done before and leveling up. I believe anyone can become future-proof, (re)gain control, and do so consistently regardless of the role, seniority or industry.

In this episode we'll walk through your personal ROI. This is a formula I've created to help you Recognize opportunities, Own your big dreams and Implement these new habits into your life. This is a pivot from the traditional definition of ROI, or return on investment, but that also applies here.

#1 RECOGNIZE - DEFINE SUCCESS

This is all about recognizing where you want to go and who you want to go there with. It's about recognizing opportunities when options may appear limited. In order to do this, we must have a clear definition of what success looks like to us, so that when opportunities arise, we spot them early.

#2 OWN IT - REINVEST & REINVENT YOURSELF

It's time to own your big dreams and believe in yourself. Reinvesting in skills, up-levelling your knowledge, improving your network and taking advantage of the pivot moments. Working towards your end goals and constant improvement.

#3 IMPLEMENT - ENDLESS CYCLE OF WORK & PIVOTS

By this point, you should have all the tools you need to create an action plan. Think about being purposeful and proactive, instead of reactionary, to help you turn your dreams into reality.
