Cassidy and Tara talk on the eve of the NBA trade deadline. They discuss the huge four team trade that occurred on Wednesday, remark on how many former Blazers are scattered throughout teams in the Northwest Division and wonder how their friends in Memphis are dealing with Andre Iguodala leaving for Miami?
LeBron was chosen as Player of the Month over Damian Lillard, can we let this stand? Anfernee Simons was passed up for the dunk contest but Pat Connaughton got the nod. How do we feel?
Finally, to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Cassidy tells us about the first U.S. Women’s National Team and the 1976 Olympics.
Highlights
00:30 Facts about the new players! Swanigan graduated from Purdue this summer. Trevor Ariza’s brother died very young and he is his inspiration because he’s been trying to live out the dreams that his brother had.
3:00 Trevor Ariza looks really good in his uniform.
3:30 Imagine being Wenyen Gabriel and getting your first start against LeBron James and blocking Javale McGee.
4:45 Pretending that the game against Denver never happened.
6:00 Trade Deadline catch-up. Woj is just messing with us at this point. But we would do the same thing.
7:45 The Big Trade between Denver, Houston, Atlanta, and Minnesota. Significant for us because two of the four teams are in the Northwest Division.
8:45 What does “Houston is going to play small-ball” really mean?
10:30 This was the biggest trade in 20 years and featured a few former Blazers. There are former Blazers all up and down the Northwest Division.
12:45 Last time a trade this complicated happened was in 2000 when the Knicks traded Patrick Ewing to Seattle.
14:00 A brief interlude about Stacey Augman, Plastic Man (and why are the names in Basketball reference so weird).
15:15 How did Andre Iguodala do it?
17:45 Has anyone ever actually accurately predicted what the Blazers were going to do at the trade deadline? Just because you can plug someone into the trade machine doesn’t mean you should.
19:00 Pat Connaughton is going to the Dunk Contest. We lodge our complaint about Anfernee not making it but we are very excited for Pat Connaughton. Actually, the way things are going, we don’t want any Blazers jumping at all. Just wrap them in bubble wrap between games. Cassidy wants less props, more dunks. Anfernee Simons has 11 dunks this season, Pat Connaughton has 20.
23:00 LeBron over Damian Lillard for Western Conference player of the month. We’re sad about that but learned that the Blazers went 8-7 in January. A winning record in January!
26:10 Okay, we’ll talk about the ten point quarter in Denver.
27:15 The Knicks part ways with their president and no one is surprised.
29:15 Olympics update! In honor of Girls and Women in Sports day: 1976 Debut of Women’s Basketball at the Olympics. The team only had about 4-6 weeks to practice together. There was no national women’s league so they had not played together. Other countries like Russia had teams where the women had played together for 10 years. The team went in with an attitude that they were going to make history.
Oral History of the 1976 Women’s Olympic Team. The Russian team that they played in the semi finals had a woman on their team who was 7ft tall. Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain attended their games.
