A little about Raychell Anderson...
Rachel Anderson's professional focus is to advocate for the human rights of people who use drugs, especially people who inject drugs (PWID), and people who work in the sex industry (PWSI) and to decrease and document the adverse consequences associated with drug use, especially injection drug use, and work in the sex industry through interventions and research. She has worked in the Sacramento Region of Northern California as a drug treatment counselor (10 years), an epidemiologist at the University of California, Davis (15 years), and the Executive Director of Safer Alternatives thru Networking Education (SANE). SANE is a community-based organization providing syringe access (exchange) and other harm reduction services to PWID and PWSI in the Sacramento region. Rachel co-founded SANE in 1993 to slow the spread of HIV among local PWID and has served as SANE's Executive Director for the past 24+ years. She has provided technical and political assistance on operational and gender issues to emergent syringe access programs in several Central Eastern and Eastern European countries. As Vice Chair and Treasurer of the International Network on Women and Drugs, she worked to keep women-specific issues on the agendas of national and international drug policy reform advocates as well as global policy
makers such as the World Health Organization. Rachel has served on several public health-related advisory boards to local and State policymakers, been a member of many grant review panels in California and Ukraine, and provided consultant services to policy makers and services programs on drug-related overdose problems and programs in California. Rachel advocates a harm reduction approach to addressing issues related to drug use and work in the sex industry.
