President Trump is vowing to repeal of the Johnson Amendment, a major goal of the religious right. The law, named for then-Senator Lyndon Johnson, prohibits tax-exempt organization, like churches, from contributing to political campaigns. Religious right organizations, like the Alliance Defending Freedom, say a pastor’s pulpit should be accountable to God only and not the IRS. Reporter Zoë Mitchell speaks with Pam Wilmot, the Executive Director of Common Cause Massachusetts, a nonprofit public interest group, says that repealing the Johnson Amendment could harm transparency in American politics.
