Following Jesus is drawn from a series of lectures Nouwen gave that have not been available in book form. Following Jesus does not require dramatic gestures, Nouwen says, but rather small steps "away from 'me' and 'my fevers'" toward God.

Gabrielle Earnshaw is the founding archivist of the Henri Nouwen Archives and Research Collection; she is an expert on his legacy.
