Femme is a term used by many feminine-identified queer people from diverse and equally valuable backgrounds including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other queer folks.
Femmes are fierce and use their voices to make themselves visible. Nevertheless, as femme women, they are often invisible to other queer people. They are often seen as heteronormative, apolitical, less radical and less queer in a community where being visible depends on being masculine or androgynous. This femmephobia in queer communities – this devaluation and stigmatization of queer femininity – is a form of misogyny that is rooted in dominant patriarchal culture
 
Keisha Watkins and Nkenge Jazz Burkhead are the co-founders of SMEARED LIPSTICK. The group is for lesbians of color who identify as femme (lipstick)! Their goal is to increase visibility and sisterhood within the femme community. Femme and Proud – we want to hear from you! How do you express your femme power in a patriarchal world?
