Today, we’re going to help you think through your goals for next year -- and we’re going to increase the likelihood of you actually following through by integrating S.M.A.R.T goals.

Ask Yourself Why:

Pick one goal you have in mind. Ask why you want to accomplish this goal.

  • What’s the main reason you want to accomplish your goal.
  • Is it to impress someone else?
  • Is it because you’ve always had this goal?
  • How good would you feel if you were to accomplish that goal?
  • What will you be able to accomplish if you finish that goal?

Set Your SMART Goals:

SMART is an acronym that stands for...

Specific - A major reason why New Year's resolutions fail are that you aren’t specific enough. Creating specific goals does something psychologically that sets you up for success.

Measurable - The more quantifiable the better. Weight is a good example because you can step on the scale and have a number.

Attainable - Make sure you are positioned with the tools required to nail your goal. If you don’t have them, go get them. Also, be sure to be realistic.

Relevant - Why is this relevant in the context of the bigger picture of your life?

Time-Bound - Put a specific time frame on your goal. (Also, don’t be too short-term. This is one of the reasons why people give up. Give it a year’s time with quarterly check points.)
