Today, we are talking about volunteer experience as a gateway to landing your dream job! Yes, we are going to talk about the idea of free work. It is such a powerful principle and one of the best ways to open doors that were not there in the first place.

Here's what we cover:

Part 1: Why you should volunteer for jobs and how it can benefit you.

  • Getting experience: Just because it’s unpaid experience doesn’t mean that the experience itself isn’t as valuable as experience if it were paid. You’re still learning the skillset and doing what you want to do.
  • Opportunities to Move Your Life Forward with Paid Jobs: Oftentimes, it’s a matter of proving yourself, connecting with people, and you’ll eventually meet the right person to get you in a position.

Part 2: Communicating your experience on a resume and within networking opportunities

  • Resumes Resumes are flexible documents. It’s key to talk about the ordering of the experience here. Just ask yourself: how much would you rather them read the volunteer experience than the other stuff?
  • LinkedIn Profiles Make sure you have experiences listed on your LI profile. The beauty about LI is that you can often link the company with all the employees that have that experience.
  • Communicate Internally to the places you’re volunteering for See what people in that organization have had professional experience within that field. Set up a meeting with them to ask how they broke into their particular field.
