A PASSION FOR DRAWING. The Guerlain Collection from the Centre Pompidou Paris
Florence Guerlain and her husband Daniel, heir to cosmetic giant Guerlain, have been collecting contemporary art since the 1980s.

In the new millenium the focus of their collecting activities shifted towards drawing, by now the Guerlain collection is regarded as one of the most outstanding collections of contemporary drawing. In 2007 they created the Prix de Dessin prize for drawing. It is doted with 25.000 € and awarded by a jury every year.

In 2012 they donated the largest part of their collection, about 1200 drawings, to the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

The Albertina is the first museum in Central Europe to give an insight into the Guerlain collection. Out of this collection, the Albertina’s curator Elsy Lahner chose about 160 works by 20 different artists. Among the featured artistic positions –almost all from the 21st century– there are artists whose work is already present in the Albertina, like Kiki Smith or Eric van Lieshout.

The rich diversity that the artistic medium drawing has developed in the 21st century is demonstated by the works that draw inspiration from the most diverse sources: art history, mythology, social issues or identity – but the artistic approaches are just as manifold.

British sculptor David Nash draws his own sculptures, transposing them from the third dimension into the second. Drawing is presented in the classical form of charcoal drawings but also as animation film. The renowned American artist Robert Longo draws on photographs, Cilean artist Sandra Vasquez de la Horra dunks her drawings in bee wax and Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov has created his „Albertinadoodles“ especially for this exhibition. They are small drawings with black ink – texts or little figures, placed in unusual spots, like on the description texts or in wall corners. They are his ironical comment on the exhibition, the museum as an institution and art as such. (written by Cem Angeli)

The exhibition runs until January 26, 2020.
