ERWIN WURM. Peace & Plenty
However, Wurm did not become famous for his drawings but for his sculptures, especially the „fat“ cars, houses, people and for the performative „One Minute Sculptures“. His work is not limited to these sculptures though. Now the Albertina shows a selection of 300 drawings by Erwin Wurm, curated by Antonia Hoerschelmann.
Wurm makes drawings on a nearly daily basis, the drawings are a kind of diary for the artist as well as memory aid for projects, or a reflection on life in general and on the people he encounters - artist friends, his family, and there are also several self-portraits. On one of them the artist is seen with one of his famous cucumbers coming out of his ears.
Some of the often humorous pictures have to do with sculptures, like the ones of caravans and trucks for his project in the Venice Biennale of 2017. The majority of the drawings are autonomous works though, and not related to his sculptures.
At the start of the exhibition arranged by topics, there are typical Erwin Wurm sculptures: A fat man and a fat car where visitors can take pictures of themselves.
The so-called „Asthma Drawings“, (a subject the artist has personal experience with) are a separate group of works that is on display at the beginning of « Peace & Plenty ».
Heads are drawn in more detail than bodies, these are sketched only roughly most of the time. Erwin Wurm is more fascinated by the human face which he approaches „like a landscape“ when drawing.
The initial point of the exhibition was a book with 400 drawings, 50 of which will be chosen by the Albertina and remain there as a donation after the exhibition.
The exhibition will continue in the Albertina until February 10, 2019. (written by Cem Angeli)
