Gottfried Helnwein - My Schiele
Egon Schiele has a special significance for the artist Gottfried Helnwein, because he is the first artist in the modern sense, i.e. an artist who is not firmly integrated into society and its power structures: Instead, he moves on the outside, he is autonomous, anarchic, revolutionary, so he became an example for all artists that followed after him. On the contrary to Klimt, who he admired very much, he did not work as a portrait artist for the ladies and gentlemen of rich society, but he showed proletarian people. Girls from the steet, pictures of children that were not mawkish, as opposed to painting in the 19th century. On the occasion of the Egon Schiele exhibition in the Albertina museum, we invited Gottfried Helnwein in front of our camera to tell us what „his“ Egon Schiele means to him.
