Jim Dine - I never look away
For Jim Dine - who we interviewed at his current exhibition at Albertina Museum in Vienna - the self-portrait is a meditation about the way an artist recognizes himself as an image. The artist does not pursue a philosophical inquiry about identity but rather the question of how it is possible, within the boundaries of the means of painting, to represent this identity, as Oscar Wilde stated: Art is a symbol because man is a symbol.

He poses like a model in the studio, as if he wanted to convey an affirmation of the profession and its mastery with this setting. Demonstrating a solemnity charged with seriousness, the face dominates while body, posture and shape are less in the foreground. The face seems to function as the body’s guide dog, the gaze organizing the features, making the gesture comprehensible for the viewer.
