Lee Miller – Vienna after the war
She lived several lives in one. At the age of seven, she was raped and infected with gonorrhoea by an acquaintance of her parents. At 19, she was the cover model of Vogue magazine, at 20 one of the most successful models of her time. At 24, she was the muse and partner of Man Ray and Jean Cocteau, and befriended Picasso, Eluard and other artists in Paris. At 25, she was a respected photographer of the avant-garde in Paris, at 26 a successful portraitist of New Yorker socialites. She got married at 27, moved to Egypt and returned to London a few years later, becoming a fashion pho-tographer. At 35 she was a war correspondent, at 37 she photographed the horrors of war and the holocaust. Shortly after the end of World War II Lee miller visited Vienna and documented the bombed City and its inhabitants. Within her stay she made fotos of the destroyed museum Albertina as well.
Now the Albertina opens its new 450 squaremeter "Galleries for Photography" with a Lee Miller exhibition. We interviewed director Klaus Albrecht Schröder. (written by Cem Angeli and Wolfgang Haas). An exhibition portrait by CastYourArt. | castyourart.com
