NITSCH. Spaces of Color
Nitsch, one of the main protagonists of Viennese Actionism, is renowned for his slaughters, procession and blood-dripping performances. His pictures were made during his pouring and painting performances in the course of his „Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries.“ In these opulent performances, huge amounts of paint, blood and intestines were spread with hands, pigments were kneaded, whole buckets were poured. In his studio and domicile Prinzendorf castle, multi-part series were produced, dealing with subjects like crucifixion, resurrection or antique Dionysian mysteries.
Over time, his painting style evolved which becomes evident in the exhibition showing around 100 paintings, curated by Elsy Lahner and director Klaus Albrecht Schröder. Art and religion, painting as a religious act are recurring themes in the artist’s oeuvre, where painting, music and performance were always closely linked. The rooms oft he exhibition were arranged around series of works, the thematic blocks are accompanied by musical compositions of Hermann Nitsch himself.
A video provides glimpses of the performances where the paintings were produced.
The exhibition shows the stages of Hermann Nitsch’s painting from the year 1962 until 2018, demonstrating that the artist constantly kept exploring new approaches and priorities.
The single paintings are embedded in the respective contexts by the hanging of entire work cycles, highlighting the processual character of the art of Hermann Nitsch.
For the artist „painting is a section of my work, and whoever manages to read it can feel my total work of art behind it“. (written by Cem Angeli)
