Today we’re finishing up in John chapter 6 - Jesus: The Bread of Life
Give people what they want, and they will follow you. The multitude was happy to chase after Jesus and benefit from His generosity. And He was generous! He miraculously provided them with an all-you-can-eat picnic in the grass. What better reason to make Him their leader? At this point in time, Jesus had many “disciples” following Him. Good feelings and material blessings were things they could believe in. But Jesus offered more. “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; And the bread which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” When they heard Jesus’ words, many were offended and left. John recalled this was a turning point in Jesus’ public ministry. Not for Jesus—He always knew what He came to do—but for many people who considered themselves followers. Not much has changed from then until now. Those who are hungry only for earthly things will eventually turn away. Refusing the feast, they settle for crumbs. But for those who truly behold and believe, nothing but the Bread of Life will satisfy hunger.
