Hugh Hempel is Co-Founder and CEO of Strainz, a leading cannabis brand management company. Mr. Hempel is a former Silicon Valley technology industry veteran. During his 30-year career in high technology, Mr. Hempel held numerous senior management positions in many innovative and pioneering technology companies including Apple and Netscape. At Netscape, he was the Director of Online Marketing and was part of the early team that made the Internet a reality for millions of people worldwide. Prior to joining Netscape, Mr. Hempel worked as Manager of Engineering and Science markets for Apple. While at Apple, he helped define the Apple Newton Message Pad, Apple’s first handheld computer that was a revolution in personal computing.

Hugh’s 12-year-old twin daughters suffer from a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease called Niemann Pick Type C (NPC), often referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s.” Due to their condition, they experience intractable seizures and use a non-psychoactive form of medical marijuana (cannabidiol) as part of their treatment regime.

Hugh speaks often as a national healthcare advocate and his family’s story has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and on CNN. As a result of dealing with his twins’ medical condition, Mr. Hempel entered the cannabis business full time in 2012 and founded Strainz to legally develop and distribute cannabis products. He is part of a team that holds production and dispensary licenses in Nevada and has expanded operations into other legal cannabis states including Colorado and Washington.
