reTHINK #5

Faith

by Louie Marsh, 10-3-2021

Read story, then show slide.

Brenda was a young woman who was invited to go rock climbing. Well, she got to a ledge where she could take a breather. As she was hanging on there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens.

Here she was, far from home, her sight now blurry. She was desperate and began to get upset, so she prayed to the Lord to help her to find it.

When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but there was no contact lens to be found. She sat down, despondent, with the rest of the party, waiting for the rest of them to make it up the face of the cliff.

She looked out across range after range of mountains, thinking of that verse that says, "The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth." She thought, "Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me."

Finally, they walked down the trail to the bottom. At the bottom there was a new party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, "Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?"

Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across the face of the rock, carrying it on it's back.

Her father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a picture

QUOTES:

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.  - --Albert Einstein

All effort is in the last analysis sustained by the faith that it is worth making.  --Ordway Tead

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.  --Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.  --St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

A faith that cannot survive collision with the truth is not worth many regrets. --Arthur C. Clarke

Faith is NECESSARY & NORMAL.

“I don't think scientists mind being proven wrong…I think any good scientist would love it. I love that no faith is needed in science. I believe something until it's proven wrong and then I believe that.”  She is expressing her faith that scientists are super human people with no attachments to their beliefs (wrong).

1) Faith Is…

Now faith is the title deed of things hoped for, proof of things which are not being seen. For by means of this [namely, faith] the elders had witness borne them. By means of faith we perceive that the material universe and the God-appointed ages of time  were equipped and fitted by God's word for the purpose  for which they were intended, and it follows therefore that which we see did not come into being out of which is visible. Hebrews 11:1-3 (Wuest’s Expanded Trans.)

  • My Assurance of Stability

  • My Conviction That The Unseen Is Real.

…It's our handle on what we can't see. Hebrews 11:1b (MSG)

Faith is to believe what we do not see, and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.  - Augustine

27By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.” (Hebrews 11:27, ESV)
