1st Peter

Pt. 8: Judgement & the House of God

By Louie Marsh, 7-23-2023

1) When I suffer for Christ, I should REJOICE!

12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (1 Peter 4:12–14, ESV)

·       It’s NORMAL for Christians to suffer.

·       Tests are not punishment, but to help me see the TRUTH.

2) Am I a Christian? Do I BELONG TO CHRIST?

15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. (1 Peter 4:15–16, ESV)

26and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.” (Acts 11:26, ESV)

·       The word “Christian” changed it meaning over time.

Example – Gay [show video], Jesus Freak.

o   Best literal translation is probably, “belonging to Christ” or “slave of Christ.”

28And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”” (Acts 26:28, ESV)

·       Christians viewed spiritual slavery to Jesus as FREEDOM.

18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”…“22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” (Romans 6:18,22, ESV)

3) Judgement begins with…ME?

17For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:17, ESV)

4) When I suffer I must TRUST God.

18And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.” (1 Peter 4:18–19, ESV)

15Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.” (Job 13:15, ESV)

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”” (Daniel 3:16–18, ESV)
