1) When I suffer for Christ, I should REJOICE!

 

“¹²Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. ¹⁴If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (1 Peter 4:12–14, ESV)

 

·       It’s NORMAL for Christians to suffer.

 

·       Tests are not punishment, but to help me see the TRUTH.

 

2) Am I a Christian? Do I BELONG TO CHRIST?

 

¹⁵But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. ¹⁶Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. (1 Peter 4:15–16, ESV)

 

“²⁶and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.” (Acts 11:26, ESV)

 

·       The word “Christian” changed it meaning over time.

 

Example – Gay [show video], Jesus Freak.

 

o   Best literal translation is probably, “belonging to Christ” or “slave of Christ.”

 

“²⁸And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”” (Acts 26:28, ESV)

 

·       Christians viewed spiritual slavery to Jesus as FREEDOM.

 

“¹⁸and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.”…“²²But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” (Romans 6:18,22, ESV)

 

3) Judgement begins with…ME?

 

¹⁷For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:17, ESV)

 

 

4) When I suffer I must TRUST God.

 

¹⁸And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” ¹⁹Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.” (1 Peter 4:18–19, ESV)

 

“¹⁵Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.” (Job 13:15, ESV)

 

“¹⁶Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. ¹⁷If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. ¹⁸But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”” (Daniel 3:16–18, ESV)
