The Gospel of John 15-21

Part 5: Love is the Fulfillment of Scripture

Last slide – Christ fulfilled the Law

1) Jesus clearly knew WHO was in charge.

9He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”” (John 19:9–11, ESV)

·       He REJECTED worldly claims of authority over him.

49And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”” (Luke 2:49, ESV)

·       He AFFIRMED that God is always & only in control.

·       He SUBMITTED  himself to that authority regardless of the cost.

8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.” (Hebrews 5:8, ESV)

2) We see God’s authority even in UNBELIEVERS.

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,” (John 19:23–24, ESV)

·       The soldiers didn’t know it, but they were PROVING Christ’s identity.

[NOT ON OUTLINE]30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.

33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”” (John 19:30–37, ESV)

3) Jesus clearly REVERED God’s Word & so should I.

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.” (John 19:28–29, ESV)

21They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.” (Psalm 69:21, ESV)

·       He did this at HEIGHT of his agony.

·       Jesus didn’t settle, he drank ALL of his Father’s cup.

4) Jesus knew that GOD’S LOVE fulfills Scripture.

26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” (John 19:26–27, ESV)

·       Not what I THINK is love.

·       Not what my culture TELLS ME is love.

·       Only what God says and shows me – that’s real LOVE.
