Thank God for the Bible!

By Louie Marsh, 2-28-2021

Intro. 5 Cartoons, last one zombie apocalypse.

1) The Bible is INSPIRED  by God.

16  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

2) The main purpose of the Bible is show me SALVATION.

15and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus  (2 Timothy 3:15, ESV)

30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30–31, ESV)

12There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Proverbs 14:12, ESV)

  • I value what’s outward & visible, God cherishes the INWARD/INVISIBLE.

7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”” (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV)

3) I must understand the Bible by…

11“For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. 12It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?” (Deuteronomy 30:11–13, ESV)

EXPLAIN READING THE BIBLE IN A YEAR CHALLENGE!!

  • Reading it SYSTEMATICALLY

4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4, ESV)

  • STUDYING

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19, ESV)

“An old Greek word. Placing together for comparison. Mary would go over each detail in the words of Gabriel and of the shepherds and compare the sayings with the facts so far developed and brood over it all with a mother’s high hopes and joy.” - Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament. Nashville, TN: Broadman Press.

  • MEDITATING  on it

2but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2, ESV)

  • Like a Cow CHEWING CUD.

6when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night;” (Psalm 63:6, ESV)

  • Learning how to think

God calls disciples to think Biblically not culturally and not to simply follow my feelings or to go by my instincts. No, God calls all disciples to think clearly, critically (I mean analytically not to be critical of others).

21  but test everything; hold fast what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (ESV)

4) Then I must deliberately APPLY God’s Word.

14But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.” (Deuteronomy 30:14, ESV)

  • Start
  • Make it MEASURABLE
  • When you fail don’t

24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” (James 1:24–25, ESV)
