The Road To the Resurrection Pt 3

I AM the Resurrection & the Life

By Louie Marsh, 3-21-2021

1) Jesus exposes His TRUE IDENTITY.

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV)

Jesus says ego eimi – I AM  This is the Greek version of what first said to Moses

  • Jesus clearly says He is

13Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”” (Exodus 3:13–14, ESV)

2) The resurrection is more than a historical event – it’s only meaningful in CHRIST.

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV)

  • Resurrection = “rising up from among the corpses”

9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9, ESV)

3) Jesus embodies authentic spiritual LIFE.

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV)

Two big words for life in the NT – bios – biological life, and Zoe – spiritual life. As you can see about 3/4s of the time the word life is Zoe.

“The Resurrection is one manifestation of the Life: it is involved in the Life” (Westcott). Note the article with both ἀναστασις [anastasis] and ζωη [zōē]. Jesus had taught the future resurrection often (6:39), but here he means more, even that Lazarus is now alive. Though he die (καν ἀποθανῃ [kan apothanēi]). “Even if he die,” condition (concession) of third class with και ἐαν [kai ean] (καν [kan]) and the second aorist active subjunctive of ἀποθνησκω [apothnēskō] (physical death, he means). Yet shall he live (ζησεται [zēsetai]). Future middle of ζαω [zaō] (spiritual life, of course - Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament

4) This DEMANDS a response of faith from me.

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”” (John 11:25–27, ESV)

24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:24–29, ESV)

5) This demands I live DIFFERENTLY because of it.

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:35–37, ESV)
