The Road to Resurrection
Pt. 3: The Road Thru Betrayal, Luke 22-23

By Louie Marsh, 4-10-2022

Intro. Famous betrayers – Judas last.

1) I should always EXPECT Satan to be working, because he is.

1  Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. 2  And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people. 3  Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4  He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. 5  And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6  So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. Luke 22:1-6 (ESV)

  • Betrayal is so painful because it’s an INSIDE JOB.

Author Harold Philby said, “ To betray you must first belong.”

John LeCarre’, (pseudonym of David John Moore Cornwell) “Betrayal can only happen if you love.”

“I used to advertise my loyalty and I don't believe there is a single person I loved that I didn't eventually betray.” ― Albert Camus, The Fall

So an attack from the outside …an enemy is not betrayal….only family, a loved one, a friend …someone that we have more than a casual relationship can actually betray us.

Judas, trusted as treasurer, how many kids do you know named Judas?

Peter, is the leader of the church and is designated a "saint. " (How many kids do you know named Peter?)

23  So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24  And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Genesis 37:23-24 (ESV)

2) I need to learn to DISCERN what’s going on around me.

20  When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21  And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22  And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23  He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24  The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25  Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.” Matthew 26:20-25 (ESV)

3) The more I UNDERSTAND PEOPLE, the better prepared I am for betrayal.

54  Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. 55  And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56  Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57  But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58  And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59  And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60  But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.. Luke 22:54-60 (ESV)

24But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.” (John 2:24–25, ESV)

16  At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 17  But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 2 Timothy 4:16-17 (ESV)

4) I must NEVER FORGET that Jesus doesn’t betray or desert me.

32  I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; 33  but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. 34  I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. Psalm 89:32-34 (NIV)

35  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36  As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38  For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39  nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-39 (ESV)

5) When I’m the betrayer I should FOLLOW Peter’s example.

61  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62  And he went out and wept bitterly. Luke 22:61-62 (ESV)
