The Recall Script

(This gets your puppy to you so you can then do the look command, food throw or stay)

Prep-step 1)

Get a good stance:

-dominant leg forward

-feet shoulder with apart

-front foot pointed at 1 o’clock

-back foot pointed at 3 o’clock

-slight bend in the knees

-elbows glued to your ribs

-hands slightly out in front of your lower mid-section

-dominant hand holding the handle of your small dog 6-foot leash

-non-dominant hand over top of your leash hand

Prep-step 2) Create space:

  • Guide your puppy away from you
  • Throw some food
  • Use a decoy distraction (another person for example)
  • Put your puppy into a sit-stay-stare (keep listening I'll explain in future podcasts)

Part 1: GET YOUR PUPPY'S ATTENTION

  • Turn your 6 ft leash into an 8 ft leash
  • Say your puppy’s name
  • Pop the leash

Part 2: GET YOUR PUPPY TO YOU WITH MOMENTUM

  • Start praising your dog while moving backward. Use your one hand to feed the other the excess leash. Make sure to keep just a little slack on the leash unless your puppy stops.
  • If your puppy stops extend your arm straight while leaning back applying constant, but lightly growing leash pressure while pulsating (kid leaving the playground)
  • Once he adjusts or looks at you immediately let off the pressure while simultaneously moving backwards while praising again. You might do steps 5 & 6 multiple times, it’s okay and an expected part of the learning process.

Part 3: DOCKING

  • As he is about 2 feet from you take a half of step in while at the exact same time put pressure straight up on the leash.
  • Once your puppy begins to sit immediately start to remove the pressure. Your puppy might change his mind while in the process of sitting.  This is fine and can be expected.  You will apply pressure the second your puppy stops moving in the sitting motion and release the second he starts again.
  • The second he sits say, “yes” and then reward.
