The book Ecclesiastes is one of the darkest, most hopeless books of the Bible. It is ruthlessly honest about life. It paints a real picture of what life is reduced to without God. It says it is all meaningless and empty. Solomon methodically moves through every sector of our lives proving this with ironclad insight. When he gets to the category of money, it is no different. He says we will never be satisfied with money. He goes on to say that in the end we are going to die anyway and we can’t take anything with us. His unavoidable conclusion is that life is empty, so just enjoy what you have while you can. It’s depressing. But at the end of the book he has one sentence of hope: “fear God and obey Him.” There is great power in those simple and straightforward words. We know there is a God and that there is more than this life. God tells us that in Jesus we have eternity. We can live our lives now in light of that incredible reality.
