Welcome to the Weekly Security Digest, a weekend publication of the critical national security stories you might have missed.

Here are the headlines:

Pompeo Faces Tough Battle for Senate Confirmation

As reported by Fox News

Most Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have announced plans to oppose Pompeo next week -- sparking speculation that the panel could take the unusual step of sending the nomination to the full Senate without a favorable recommendation.

A lack of Senate support for Pompeo could spell trouble for Trump who already sees the former Kansas congressman as “the nation’s chief diplomat.”

The Importance of Striking Syria's Scientific Studies and Research Center

As reported by PJ Media

With air strikes on Syria's chemical weapons facilities, carried out jointly with Britain and France, America has done the right thing.

Leading from in front, President Trump is finally redrawing the red line that President Obama erased in 2013.

The vital message is that America is no longer the hamstrung giant of the Obama era.

Tyrants such as Syria's Bashar al-Assad, and his patrons in Moscow and Tehran, have been served notice that it would be unwise to continue to assume that America will waffle, appease or simply retreat while they take upon themselves the shaping -- to monstrous effect -- of the 21st-century world order.

This message is also likely to resonate in Beijing (which has reportedly been planning live-fire naval exercises next week in the Taiwan Strait) and Pyongyang (with its nuclear missile projects).

Israel Planning for Direct Retaliatory Attack from Iran

As reported by The Jerusalem Post

Israel is preparing for a crossborder attack by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, in response to a strike allegedly carried out by the Jewish state against an Iranian-operated air base in Syria that killed seven of its soldiers.

Israel believes the attack will come in the form of precision-guided missiles or armed drones launched from a base in Syria by the IRGC itself – not by proxies, as was done before.

Aerial photos of Iranian bases in Syria were released Tuesday morning that show Tehran has increased the scope of its military relationship with the Assad regime under the auspices of the IRGC’s air force commander Brig.-Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh.
