For those who would have learnt their old catechism, the term the corporal works of mercy would be familiar one. The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise.  They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs". They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. 

One of the corporal works of mercy is to "visit prisoners" and is a reminder to us that people in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God.  No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find moments of encounter with the Divine and grace even in the midst of their circumstances.

On this weeks programme we have a discussion with Christine Hoctor about her work as prison chaplain in Limerick prison and what it means to be a presence to those who are serving time behind the high walls on Mulgrave Street in Limerick city.
