Tarzan of the Apes was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1914. The novel told the story of an english noble family stranded on the African continent. Gorillas kill the mother and father, leaving their son, Lord Greystoke, to be raised by apes. The radio program aired from 1932-1936 then a new series ran from 1951-1953. Burroughs himself was involved with the early Tarzan radio episodes. In those early episodes, Burrough's daughter Joan played Jane, and her husband, James Pierce played Tarzan. Tarzan is considered to be the first major syndicated radio program.
