JAMES VOLKERT | USA??James Volkert has overseen a major institutional design process, facilitated exhibition design and nurtured institutional changes of an enormous scale through his administering three building programs culminating in the recent opening of National Museum of the American Indian. He has developed and installed more than 350 exhibitions on the arts, science, and history. His experience is broad in understanding issues of institutional growth, new construction and architecture, exhibition development, staffing, resources, schedules, and audience demographics.??He is the former Associate Director for the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution, in Washington D.C. In that capacity, he was responsible for all aspects of the completion of the new museum on the National Mall which opened September 21, 2004. This includes exhibitions, programs, architectural coordination, and visitor services. He has also served as Assistant Director for Exhibitions and Public Spaces (NMAI), opening the George Gustav heye Center of the Museum in New York in 1994 and the architectural planning of the Cultural Resources Center opened in 1999 in Suitland Maryland. He was responsible for the development and implementation of the Native consultations; the conceptual development of the permanent exhibitions; the architectural coordination with the museum staff; completion of all of the media, and management of the transition process.??Prior to that, he was Director of Exhibitions for the National Museum of American Art. He has served as a consultant to museums nationally in the development of programs and has worked with museum programs in Argentina, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, uruguay, and Peru.??He served as Vice President of the National Association for Museum Exhibition and taught exhibition development at the George Washington university for 10 years.??He holds a B.A. in fine art from the university of California and an M.F.A from Art Center, College of Design.??Currently, he consults internationally with museums on exhibition and facilities development, new programs, and management.
