The boys deliverance depended in this case on his fathers faith.  Though it was "help me overcome my unbelief" Jesus went ahead and delivered the boy

-The disciples discovered later with Jesus this kind demon cannot be cast out except by prayer

-A persons lack of faith can be translated into their unreliability
