Myanmar’s anti-coup demonstrators hold overnight protests in defiance of curfew and International Women’s Day marked with rallies around the world

*) Myanmar protesters defy curfew to support trapped students

Anti-coup demonstrators in Myanmar’s biggest city Yangon have held their first overnight mass protest in defiance of an 8 pm curfew.

The incident-free protest was in support of an estimated 200 students trapped by security forces in a neighbourhood.

The country has been in turmoil since the February coup triggered mass protests against the military junta, which has responded with an intensifying and violent crackdown.

*) Death toll from accidental explosions in Equatorial Guinea rises

The death toll from a series of blasts at a military camp in Equatorial Guinea has risen to 98, with hundreds wounded.

Blamed on negligence, the blasts devastated buildings at the military compound and houses in surrounding residential areas.

The incident comes as the country, an oil producer, is suffering a double economic shock due to Covid-19 and a drop in the price of crude oil.

*) Brazil judge clears ex-leader Lula to run again in 2022

The Brazil Supreme Court has overturned graft convictions against former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The move could allow the popular politician to run in the 2022 presidential election.

Lula was convicted of corruption in 2018. He was released the following year but was still barred from office.

*) UN urges Yemen’s Houthis to allow access to injured migrants

The UN migration agency has urged Yemen’s Houthi rebels to allow access to refugees and asylum-seekers injured in a fire at a detention centre in the capital.

The blaze killed at least eight people and injured more than 170 migrants, 90 of whom were in critical condition.

The centre held around 900 migrants and is run by the Houthi rebels who have controlled Sanaa since the start of Yemen’s conflict in 2014.

And finally…

*) Thousands take to streets on Women’s Day

Women across the world marked International Women's Day 2021 to denounce gender violence and inequalities.

Though marches took place in many countries despite pandemic restrictions, the Women's Day events were more subdued.

People all over the world were asked to "put their hand up" and show they will choose to challenge, [#ChooseToChallenge] a hashtag that was quick to trend on social media.
