In this episode, we chat to Phil Day, CEO of Scotgold, a junior mining company that is Scotland’s first gold producer. They are growing their company with further exploration activities in and around the Scottish Highlands.

Phil is a highly experienced senior mining executive with a career spanning over 25 years. He has a background in metallurgy and chemistry and has many senior appointments in his career in Africa and the US before taking the helm at Scotgold and talks to us about Scotland’s first gold mine and what it means to the area and the Scottish people.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The geology of the Cononish Mine, in Scotland, is the best Phil has seen throughout his career.

  • Lead was first mined in Cononish in the 1700s.

  • The quartz vein was found in the 1980s, then gold.

  • Gold production started in 2020.

  • Gold is being found in places they were not expecting, in the mine.

  • They are operating in a National Park. Phil explains how they are handling this. In particular what they are doing with the tailings.

  • They are predicting an EBIT Da of about 21 to 24 million.

  • The plan is to take the company into the million-tonne area, by running an exploration programme.

  • They produce a concentrate, as well as gravity gold. So, they will be able to make Scottish gold coins, bars and jewellery.
