In this episode we chat to Marna Cloete, President of Ivanhoe Mines, a leading Canadian mining company committed to becoming a global leader in the supply of critical resources required to transition our world to a low-carbon, renewable future. Ivanhoe is focused on developing and expanding its four principal mining and exploration projects in Southern Africa. The development of the Kamoa-Kakula copper mining complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC), the Platreef palladium-rhodium-platinum-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa, the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the Democratic Republic of Congo and exploration on the Western Foreland, near Kamoa-Kakula.

Marna Cloete is a registered Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Pretoria.  She joined Ivanhoe back in 2006 and has played an instrumental role as part in Ivanhoe’s leadership team, achieving a number of strategic milestones and continues to go from strength to strength. Marna shares her journey from starting with the company with only 10 employees to now over 18,000 and why Ivanhoe is leading the way in the supply of much needed critical resources. She shares her wisdom and advice for females within the mining industry and what’s its like working  and learning from Robert Friedland.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Ivanhoe employs over 18,000 people across the organisation, and have all contributed to the slow formation of this mighty mining concern.

  • One of the most important elements of Ivanhoe is the culture, that was established at the very outset some 26 years ago, when the team was made up of just ten people. Growing slowly has allowed their personal values and culture to grow with the company.

  • Ivanhoe has piloted an electric fleet, where issues with efficiency were noted. Work has been done to remedy these challenges, and soon they hope to transition entirely to an electric fleet.

  • Senior executives cannot hope to operate from afar. They need to engage with their workforce and operate on the ground alongside them.

BEST MOMENTS

'Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think that I've been with Ivanhoe for 17 years'

'We were focussed on ensuring that we were supplying the next great copper supply'

'We've always tried to keep our structures flat and not too bureaucratic'

'It's important for partnerships to create value'
