In this episode we have a returning guest who appeared back in Dec 2021 (episode 193), Mike Ferguson who is the President and CEO of Gensource Potash who are a Canada-based fertiliser development company, which is focused on developing resource opportunities with a specific focus on potash development.

Mike is a professional engineer with over 25 years experience in potash and uranium. He is leading the development of this green-field property. Mike gives us an update on their Tugaske Project and on the potash industry as a whole. He also covers the issue of the 40% reduction in supply which is a consequence of the Russian/Ukraine war.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • GenSource is growing to 3 million tonnes per year of potash production. Doing so in a modular and scalable way.

  • Their approach can bring a new site into production in 2 years as opposed to the typical 8 to 10 years.

  • Their production method consumes 75% less water per ton compared to conventional solution mining.

  • They leave no salt tailings. This is good for ESG and makes licensing far easier.

  • There is a genuine shortage of potash. 40% of the world’s supply is under a cloud right now.

  • Higher construction costs are making scaling more difficult.

BEST MOMENTS

‘The methods we are using have been proven in different parts of the world. ´

‘There is a genuine structural supply-side problem, in the (potash) industry.’

‘We started this with the idea of using a form of solution mining that allows us to avoid salt tailings altogether.’
